Getting on with the job of Fixing our Education System

By The Hon. Chris Minns MP

23 June 2023

My Government values our teachers and the work they do.

Under the former Liberal government an alarming 40% of NSW teachers were left in casual positions, forcing them into an uncertain working environment.

The casualisation of our teachers was a major contributor to NSW’s teacher shortage crisis, which led to our children being forced into collapsed and merged classes. As a result, their education suffered and NSW’s educational rankings plummeted.

That is why at the March State Election, I committed to fixing the critical teacher shortage in our schools.

A key part of this commitment is to transition 16,000 teachers currently on temporary contracts onto permanent contracts, by the beginning of Term 4, 2023.

In just three months, I have successfully transitioned over 5,500 teachers onto permanent contracts because I know how urgent and important it is that we have more teachers in front of the classroom permanently.

Our children deserve a world class education, having a permanent teacher and a stable learning environment is paramount to achieving this.

This will also give teachers the job security they need to stay in their profession and the confidence to focus on what they do best, teaching our kids.

The first offers went to schools that support our highest need students and have struggled the most to find staff.

All other permanent appointments under this program are anticipated to be in place by the start of the 2024 school year.

As your Premier, I am working hard to deliver a world class education system for our children and giving our teachers the support, they need.

Yours sincerely,

The Hon. Chris Minns MP
