First look at Canterbury Hospital redevelopment

By The Hon. Chris Minns MP

24 February 2025

The first look of the $350 million Canterbury Hospital redevelopment was unveiled this month, showcasing the new facility expansion and major upgrades with the launch of the master plan images.

Canterbury Hospital has been serving this community since 1929 and received its last major upgrade in 1998. These upgrades will be the biggest in over 25 years.

The redevelopment will maximise the capacity of existing facilities available at the Canterbury Hospital campus, including the main hospital building and the Canterbury Health Centre.

At the election, we promised to make these improvements, and this update is an import milestone on the road to delivering them.

In recent decades, the Canterbury area has had significant population growth, placing pressure on hospital services. In the coming decades, it will continue to grow, according to population projections.

This investment will help build the healthcare infrastructure we need to cater for this growing community and allow our dedicated nurses to deliver high-quality care in the latest facilities.

The redevelopment will also help provide local jobs in health, technology and clinical support services.

Whenever I visit the Canterbury Bankstown, I feel an overwhelming sense of energy and optimism.

NSW Labor is making sure we build the infrastructure you need to good life in this proud community, while seizing the opportunities of the future.

That includes the new Metro line - going from Canterbury to Bankstown, through Campsie and Belmore, Lakemba, Wiley Park and Punchbowl.

That includes upgrades to local schools, as part of our $3.6 billion fund to build and improve schools in Western Sydney.

And it includes looking after our youngest people, by building four next public preschools - at Birrong, Chullora, Harcourt and Yagoona.

The NSW Labor Government will continue to build the future of Canterbury Bankstown, while ensuring the best possible health care for you and your family.
