Delivering more accessible and affordable healthcare

By The Hon. Chris Minns MP

13 February 2026

When I became Premier in 2023, I made a pledge that my government would make our healthcare system more affordable and accessible for everyone.

One of the ways we're doing that is working to make treatments and diagnoses cheaper, to put more money back in your pocket.

It's why we introduced exciting, nation leading reforms to ADHD treatment.

Before our reforms people seeking treatment or diagnosis for ADHD had to navigate a costly and overloaded paediatric and psychiatry system, experiencing long wait times and high fees which could delay treatment and cause harm, particularly for children.

Our reforms will allow GPs to undergo training to diagnose and treat ADHD, meaning more families can visit their local GP and get the care they need for less.

These reforms will save families hundreds of dollars in out-of-pocket costs and allow them to get better care closer to where they live.

Since 1 September 2025, over 5000 patients have already benefitted from phase 1 of the reforms which gave GPs the ability to refill ADHD scripts.

To find a GP who can provide this service, call Healthdirect on 1800 022 222, and a registered nurse will be able to assist you find a service close to you.

I'm also proud of our government's work to rebuild our health system after twelve years of neglect from the former Liberal National Government.

One of the first things we did was to abolish the former government wages cap, that suppressed the pay of our health workforce and caused nurses and doctors to leave the system in droves.

Now we are hiring more nurses, doctors and healthcare workers to rebuild our health system.

Our State will welcome more than 3,200 new graduate nurses and midwives this year alone, with 332 nurses and 23 midwives working in our local community.

We're also welcoming over 1,000 junior doctors, with 116 joining hospitals across the South East Sydney Local Health district.

The interns will work with and learn from NSW Health's experienced and highly skilled medical staff in one of the world's best health systems.

The new doctors starting their internship will be entering a training program with networked hospitals throughout the State, providing formal and on-the-job training.

We're also making it easier to become a health professional, with fee-free TAFE courses in healthcare and 4,000 students and graduates benefiting from our health study subsidy each year, covering the cost of placements, travel, and fees.

We are committed to delivering the health services and workforce our growing State needs.
