The terrifying attack at Bondi Beach shattered a Hanukkah celebration and has left families, first responders and an entire community grieving the loss of at least 15 innocent lives.
Make no mistake, this is one of the darkest days in the history of our state. With victims aged between 10 and 87, generations of Jewish Australians have been killed for the simple fact they were Jewish.
The scenes were horrific, but the response from NSW Police and emergency services was immediate and courageous, running towards danger to protect others and save lives.
When innocent people are targeted simply for who they are, the government has a clear responsibility to act.
The horrific events of Sunday require a comprehensive response that prioritises public safety. It requires legislative change that is too critical to wait until Parliament resumes next year.
My government is now finalising a legislative package to strengthen police powers to manage protests and protect public safety, and to tighten firearms regulation to reduce the risk of future harm.
But in the face of such hatred, Australians have responded with unity, compassion and an unshakeable commitment to stand with the Jewish community.
We have seen an outpouring of love directed towards our Jewish friends and neighbours in NSW. And in the days and months ahead, we will continue to wrap our arms around the Jewish community and help them through this incredibly distressing time.
This is a massive and deeply complex investigation, and police are using every power available to uncover exactly what happened, who was involved, and whether there are further threats.
What we do know is that members of the public - incredible, everyday heroes raced into danger and gave immediate comfort and care to those in need.
Strangers coming together in defiance of violence.
The community should know that NSW Police and emergency services are fully mobilised, and there is no higher priority than keeping people safe.
